MINING IN GHANA
Ghana has a long history of mining beginning in the early C16th. Until independence, Ghana was known as ‘GOLD COAST’ because of the abundance of gold in the country. It was during this same period of the early Portuguese encounter (1500s) that a famous trading town in the central region of Ghana was christened “LA MINA’ meaning, ‘the MINE’. The town is called ELMINA, a corruption of the Portuguese, ‘La Mina” or “the MINE”. This was because of the large amounts of gold that was obtained through trading with the indigenes. It is on record that all the gold obtained during his period was through surface mining and was on small scale, usually the work of women and children.
